The SIMON SAID THIS
Storytelling Approach
At Simon Said This, I specialise in crafting stories that transcend cultural boundaries and resonate deeply with audiences. In today’s diverse and interconnected world, understanding and telling these stories is more important than ever. My approach is rooted in a commitment to cultural intelligence, human connection, and agile adaptability—key elements that ensure each project I undertake achieves meaningful impact.

Culturally Intelligent
Storytelling is an art, but it's also a science. It’s about more than just language; it’s about capturing the essence of a culture and communicating it in a way that resonates universally.
With decades of experience in helping brands connect with diverse audiences, I bring a deep understanding of cultural dynamics to every project. This experience is not just professional—it’s personal. Having lived in a cross-cultural community for over 25 years, I bring a nuanced perspective that ensures your message honors the cultural richness of its subjects.
“Simon’s approach to his work is characterised by his ability to ask insightful questions that lead to a comprehensive project brief. His writing style is nothing short of remarkable; it strikes a chord with our target audience, making our communication efforts exceptionally effective.”

Agile and Adaptive
The world of storytelling is dynamic, and so is my approach. I understand that projects evolve, often in unexpected ways.
By embracing agile methodology, I ensure that your story remains relevant and impactful, no matter how the landscape shifts. This flexibility is crucial in a fast-paced world where the ability to pivot can make all the difference between a good story and a great one.
“Simon worked with our team for a project under pressure. He provided senior editing, desktop research, and media/comms services. He helped clarify our thinking and communication, bringing both his experience and personable nature to our team, and helped us achieve the high quality of work we were striving for. His curiosity and openness to new perspectives and ways of working was exceptional.”
— Robyn Kamira, Creator, Toi Hangarau: A Report on Maori-owned Technology Enterprises (2023 version)

Human-Centric Messaging
At the heart of every story is a person—real, flesh-and-blood humans who seek connection, meaning, and understanding.
My focus is on crafting messages that speak directly to these needs, ensuring that your story doesn’t just reach your audience, but resonates with them on a deeply human level.
This human connection is what turns viewers or readers into advocates, a critical element for the success of any project.
“Simon consistently demonstrates an impressive breadth of knowledge across a wide range of subjects, spanning from cutting-edge technology to childcare. Furthermore, he exhibits a deep understanding of cross-cultural nuances, which has proven invaluable in bridging the gap between our Chinese clients and the Western market.”

About

As a Multimedia Storyteller with a rich background in writing, video production, and strategic communication, I am dedicated to uncovering and telling the stories that matter most—stories that connect us to our past, inform our present, and inspire our future.
Video/Podast Production
With a long-standing presence in the digital content space, I’ve been producing impactful content on platforms like YouTube since 2006 and TikTok since its inception. My latest series, "One Ancestor at a Time," is a testament to my commitment to exploring and sharing stories that resonate across generations. This project, in particular, reflects my passion for connecting people with their heritage and honouring the legacies of those who came before us.
Cross-Cultural Expertise
My work is deeply rooted in cultural sensitivity and awareness. Over the years, I’ve helped numerous New Zealand brands engage with Chinese audiences and have led multicultural teams to achieve remarkable results. In my personal life, my 25-year marriage into a Samoan family and our shared responsibilities as matai in her village underscore my lived commitment to cross-cultural understanding and respect. Today, my wife Marie and I combine our strengths in Pacific Enterprise People (PEP).
Training and Facilitation
My ability to communicate complex ideas in an accessible way has made me a sought-after speaker and trainer. I’ve led workshops, keynotes, and training sessions across New Zealand, Australia, and China, including the highly successful social media course at the University of Auckland. My focus is always on providing practical insights that empower others to tell their stories effectively.
Author and Journalist
As the author of "Reboot Yourself!"—a self-help book designed for those who are sceptical of the genre—I’ve demonstrated my ability to challenge conventions and connect with readers on their own terms. My work as a journalist for leading publications like the NZ Herald and NZ Marketing Magazine has further honed my skills in distilling complex ideas into compelling narratives.
Strategic Advisor
My strategic insights have helped many turn their ideas into reality. I focus on the big picture, helping clients leverage their strengths, identify unique selling points, and craft stories that not only engage but inspire action. Whether advising on a new project or refining an existing strategy, my goal is always to ensure that your story is told in the most impactful way possible.
Why This Matters
The work I do isn’t just about telling stories—it’s about preserving legacies, fostering understanding, and building bridges between generations. My goal is to create content that not only entertains but educates and inspires, connecting people with their roots and encouraging them to explore the rich tapestry of their heritage.
